NYC HAS NO EVACUATION PLAN IN PLACE FOR RIKERS ISLAND DESPITE ITS BEING IN HURRICANE EVACUATION ZONE
More evidence that the City views the inmate population as expendable:
According to a MAP available through the NYC Office of Emergency Management, Rikers Isalnd is in a hurricane evacuation zone. Nevertheless, “the city does not plan to evacuate Rikers Island” for Hurricane Irene, and ”according to the city’s Department of Correction, NO HYPOTHETICAL EVACUATION PLAN for the roughly 12,000 inmates that the facility may house on a given day even exists. Contingencies do exist for smaller-scale relocations from one facility to another.”
